Remote Health Monitoring for Accountable care

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are being formed throughout the United States in an effort to achieve higher quality care, an ability to participate in shared savings, and doing so by coordination among the providers, payers, and patients. ACOs need to achieve better results in care delivery while utilizing less resources, and reducing expenditures. As ACOs produce better coordination, greater reimbursement will follow. ACO’s have already been implemented in Medicare’s Physician Group Practice and demonstrated significant improvements in the quality of the care and savings.

While remote patient monitoring can improve efficiencies, existing Telehealth 1.0 systems, do not provide an effective means to facilitate the goals of the ACOs – primarily due to cost and challenges with infrastructure. These hurdles result in providers implementing telehealth solutions as a last resort – reserved for the most ill – to warrant the expense in funds and resources. At that point, a great deal of cost has already been incurred – producing a “reactive” care model. New technology and most importantly – a new infrastructure – is necessary for ACOs to demonstrate higher performance measures, coordinate local accountability and ultimately achieve shared savings.
